What’s the secret to happiness? It’s a question that’s been pondered throughout time, and the answer usually depends on whom you ask! While you’re mulling it over, we’ve put together a few tips to bring more happiness into your life:
Use your phone to speak to someone
Connecting with others is one proven way to feel happier. But there are different ways to connect, and each of them affords us distinct benefits. If you’re wanting to boost your happiness quotient, speaking to someone is the best way to do it. Voice-to-voice conversations are more nuanced and therefore more meaningful than an exchange of emojis. So the next time you pick up your phone, use your phone the old-fashioned way and call someone!
Move more
Moving isn’t just good for your body, it’s also good for your mood and mental health. Science links movement with changes in the brain, including the growth of new brain cells and improved memory and learning. Movement also helps release the brain’s ‘feel good’ chemicals. There really is no downside to taking a walk.
Practice gratitude
Making a gratitude list is a proven stress reducer and mood stabilizer. It doesn’t even have to be written down, in fact—just thinking about what you are thankful for before you go to bed every night will help you feel happier and sleep better. Feeling gratitude helps you focus on the present moment, which, in turn, helps you to avoid dwelling on the past or worrying about the future.
Choose happiness
In his book, Happiness Is a Choice You Make: Lessons From a Year Among the Oldest Old, New York Times reporter John Leland explains that happiness is indeed something you can choose. This choice is something older people do regularly, simply because they understand that they don’t want to use their remaining time being anything other than happy. So take a lesson from the 85+ set and remember that happiness is an action you decide to do, not a given!
